Thubten Chodron to teach at JH Cleveland
Venerable Thubten Chodron, founder of Sravasti Abbey, returns to Cleveland for a series of talks at Jewel Heart Cleveland July 6 through 8. Author of Open Heart, Clear Mind, Working with Anger, and many other wonderful books, she is known for her clear and humorous teaching style, drawing examples from 21st century American life. Ordained as a Buddhist nun in 1977, she has studied extensively with Lama Yeshe, Lama Zopa Rinpoche, as well as H.H. the Dalai Lama and other great teachers in the same tradition as Gehlek Rimpoche. We are very pleased to welcome her back to Cleveland.

Gehlek Rimpoche to teach The Smooth Path!
Gehlek Rimpoche, founder and president of Jewel Heart, will give a two-day teaching July 21-22 on The Smooth Path (Tib. Delam) one of the eight great lamrims of the Tibetan tradition, written by Panchen Lama Lobsang Chokyi Gyaltsen. A lamrim teaching encompasses meditations on all stages of the path to enlightenment. In addition to his commentary on the root text, Rimpoche will give the oral transmission This is an exceptional opportunity to receive a teaching and transmission that Rimpoche has not given before. Preparing for a Teaching
'What do I need to know to get the most benefit from Rimpoche's teachings July 21 and 22?' This informal free session is designed to help. We will cover questions like What is the lamrim tradition? What is a root text? What is an oral transmission? Who was Panchen Lobsang chokyi Gyaltsen? What are the prayers we chant before and after the teachings? What do the offerings on the altar mean? How do I show respect for Rimpoche? and any other questions you wish to raise.

Silent Auction to run July 6-22
We are still accepting donations!
JH Cleveland's biggest annual fundraiser is our silent auction, which will run this year for two weeks in July. Please bring in items of $20 or greater value that you wish to donate or call Anne at 440-478-4646 to arrange for pickup (donations are tax deductible). Rumor has it that the auction will include treasures from Tibet and other exotic locales donated by our Cleveland world travelers. Come shop the auction for bargains galore - great for gifts!
The auction will be open before and after Thubten Chodron's and Rimpoche's teachings, at classes between the two weekend teachings, and will conclude during lunch break on Sunday, July 22.

May-June 2007
Nine Cleveland area sangha members attended Gehlek Rimpoche's intense teaching on The Wheel of Sharp Weapons at Garrison Institute over Memorial Day weekend. Rimpoche gave the complete oral transmission of this advanced Mahayana work, but focused his teaching on the first half. He will again teach this entire text over Labor Day weekend in Ann Arbor, focusing more on the second half.
Our Cleveland system for receiving and projecting Rimpoche's live video teachings is now up and running. We conducted a successful test on May 22 and our first public screening on May 29, with 10 people attending. Rimpoche will continue his teachings on The Inner World of Mind in July.
More than 40 people attended the Sangha council meeting and High Tea on Sunday April 21. Thanks to the hard work of many people, everyone enjoyed hearing about Sangha Council activities, meeting new people, and sampling delicious teas and food. The Sangha council executive committee followed up with a meeting on June 10. Dharma coordinators met to plan programs for the rest of 2007 and 2008 after the SCEC meeting.
Library re-cataloguing The library is currently being re-catalogued, thanks to library scientist Tim! Please return all library materials so that they can receive their new catalog registration.
Volunteer database - we are collecting a database of skills and interests of people who might like to spend a little or a lot of time volunteering for Jewel Heart. It's a fun chance to get to know sangha members and help JH. Please fill out one of the forms available at the center.
Sunday talks have been well attended and offer a way for new people to get a taste of Jewel Heart and for older students to hear different perspectives on practice. In May and June, Anne Warren and Vivian Hartman spoke to appreciative audiences. We also began a monthly screening of a video of Rimpoche giving a Sunday talk in Ann Arbor, followed by discussion among the viewers.
A test-run of a refuge practice workshop in May was well received by participants. Family day brought parents and young children to the center for stories, dharma activities and fun in the park. And last, but not least, the almost annual picnic at the Kirchner's in May was an afternoon of fantastic food, fun, and no poison ivy!
