News from Cleveland
In Memoriam
Longtime Jewel Heart member and dear friend, Dennis Gilligan passed
away on
Monday, October 10 after a lengthy illness. Dennis's courage,
compassion and
unfailing humor have long served as an example for many of us
on what it
means to bring dharma practice into our daily lives. He will be
sorely
missed. The memory of Den can best be honored by having a good
laugh or by
doing a random act of kindness. Donations in his memory are also
appreciated. The family has asked that donations be made to Jewel
Heart or
to the Hospice of Western Reserve.
About 75 friends and family members gathered for a memorial service
at Jewel
Heart Cleveland on Saturday, October 15 to remember Dennis with
prayer,
laughter, loving stories and, of course, chocolate.
Namgyal Monks:
Three monks from Namgyal Monastery in Ithaca, NY were in Cleveland
from
August 27 through October 8 to create a sand mandala at Cleveland
City Hall.
On September 13, they joined about 25 members of the sangha at
JH Cleveland
for a potluck dinner featuring lots of delicious food and great
conversation. The evening was a smashing success, so much so in
fact that
the monks returned to JH-C for a second potluck on October 2.
Tremont Arts and Cultural Festival
Jewel Heart once again was represented at the Tremont Arts and
Cultural Festival by Ujjen Tsewang, store manager at Jewel Heart
Ann Arbor. As always Ujjen and the JH volunteers had a great time
selling lots of cool stuff and raising funds for JH.
Training Day
On Saturday October 22, Dharma Coordinator Anne Warren and Instructors
Susan Kirchner and Sarah Ralston attended a one-day Dharma Instructors'
seminar with Gehlek Rimpoche in Ann Arbor. The main focus of the
day was discussion on how best to present Rimpoche's teachings
in order to spread the Dharma and help others.
Photo Show
Jewel Heart Cleveland hosted Sarah Ralston's delightful photo
exhibit "Faces and Hands: Images of Asia" from August
20 - September 12. After leaving Jewel Heart, Sarah's photos traveled
across town where they featured prominently in the Kalman and
Pabst Photo Group show.
Sangha Council
As most of you know, Jewel Heart is in the process of implementing
a more "formal" organizational structure centered around
individual Sangha Councils at each chapter. The official guidelines
for the Jewel Heart Sangha Councils were released in September
and are available on the Jewel Heart Cleveland website.
The document explains the idea behind the new organization and
outlines the roles and responsibilities of the various members
of the Sangha Council Executive Committee (SGEC) as well as the
Sangha Council Chairpersons Committee (SGCC). There is also a
document available on the website listing the current members
of the Cleveland committees. The Cleveland SGEC is currently planning
a meeting for sometime next month and will post the minutes on
the
webpage following the meeting.
