Namgyal Monks sand mandala at City Hall
Over a period of six weeks three venerable lamas from the Namgyal
Monastery, the personal monastery of H. H. Dalai Lama of Tibet,
will painstakingly lay millions of grains of brilliantly colored
sand into an intricate design of a Kalachakra mandala.
The tradition of mandala painting, dating back more than 1,000
years, draws from an ancient iconography that includes geometric
shapes and a multitude of spiritual symbols. Known for their remarkable
artistry, the lamas of Namgyal Monastery have exhibited their
skills in museums and galleries throughout the world. This event
is sponsored by the Cleveland Museum of Art in partnership with
the city of Cleveland. Admission is free.

Cleveland Jewel Heart News
The "First Sunday" dharma talks continue to be among
the more popular and well-attended events at Cleveland Jewel Heart.
In July our own Anne Warren spoke on "Spiritual Practice:
Why Bother?" and in August James Jorah addressed "Beginning
and Maintaining a Daily Practice". These free talks are held
the first Sunday of every month from 1-2 pm. (Note: No September
talk
due to Ann Arbor workshop.)
On Saturday July 9, about 20 sangha members gathered at the South
Mastick picnic area in MetroParks Rocky River Reservation to celebrate
His Holiness, the Dalai Lama's 70th birthday called with a potluck
picnic. In addition to the good food, good weather and great company,
highlights of the celebration included poetry readings by Ray
McNiece and other Cleveland area poets.
More than 100 people attended Gehlek Rimpoche's teachings on
Lojong, held at Cleveland Jewel Heart on Saturday and Sunday,
August 20 and 21. Based on the Eight Verses For Training The Mind
by Langri Thangpa, Rimpoche's teachings beautifully explained
this advanced Mahayana practice.
Once again, Cleveland Jewel Heart was fortunate to host Ven.
Thubten Chodron, founder of Sravasti Abby and author of Introduction
to Buddhism, Open Heart, Clear Mind and many other wonderful books,
for a weekend of delightful dharma talks on July 22-24.
