June/July
News
For those attending Rimpoche’s
talk in June, the atmosphere was nothing less than electric. Rinpoche
has the ability to communicate in such a way that each person in the audience
can feel they are receiving his undivided attention. We were certainly
fortunate to be honored with his presence once again.….
Classes continue on Monday
(Vajrayana)and Wed (Odyssey to Freedom) eves, 7-9 pm at JH.…..
Visions of the East –
JH Cleveland was the host for Light of Asia, an awesome exhibit of the
photos of Ani Palmo, who as evidenced by her work is a thoughtful, talented
artist.
JH Cleveland hosted a picnic
in celebration of His Holiness The Dalai Lama’s birthday July 6.
Thanks to Steve for all his hard work in getting ittogether as well as
those who contributed their talents to the event. The picnic was a memorable
event attended by people fromall over northern Ohio and Pennsylvania.
Within the serene setting of Deva's Edge Retreat, a well-timed thunderstorm
and downpour fostered sangha bonding as we allcrowded together trying
not to get wet! Then under a tent quickly erected by the Deva's Edge team,
Tara dances and chants concluded with moments of sunshine. After the entire
group sang the Jewel Heart practice and long-life prayers for His Holiness,
the sun came out in earnest for the smoke offering of juniper branches.
The afternoon concluded withsinging "Happy Birthday Dalai Lama"
and delicious banana chocolate cake baked by Corey.…..
Twelve people gathered on Sat.
July 12 to learn about Tibetan prayer beads or malas which are used to
help involve body, speech and mind in mantra practice. Everyone attending
selected various stone and silver beads to make a custom 108 bead mala
with cotton tassel and a good time was had by all. Those attending the
workshop may have their malas restrung for free if they break within the
next 6 months!
New project A set of mala repair
materials including cord or wire for stringing will be kept at Jewel Heart
Cleveland. Anyone may use these materials to repair their broken malas
for a donation of $5 to Jewel Heart. If you want someone to restring a
mala for you, the requested donation will be $15 to JewelHeart, plus the
cost of any extra beads needed. We hope soon to have some Cleveland-made
malas for sale as an ongoing fund-raiser.
Anne will be making
arrangements for ongoing 8 Mahayana precepts days. These 24-hour precepts
will be taken on full moon days at 5:30 am – locations to change
and be announced as the days approach. Contact Anne 440-576-1190
or aewarren@apk.net if you are interested
and want to know the location.
A number of Jewel Heart members
attended the events surrounding the visit of HH Penor Rimpoche to Chagrin
Falls, sponsored by Palyul Ohio which included the performance of the
Tibetan Black Hat Dance, construction of a sand mandala and other events.

Jewel Heart Summer Retreat 2003 August 3-9
Everyday Matters: Bringing the Sacred to Life
This year's JH summer retreat will be held in a new facility
at Albion College in a small town about 1 hour west of Ann Arbor. Gelek
Rimpoche will be presenting important new material on how the mind functions
and how to transform negative mind states. He invites and encourages everyone
to attend, and has said that people who cannot come for the whole week
are welcome to attend part of the teachings. In case of financial hardship,
some adjustments may be possible.
As always, the retreat will include several daily teachings
by Gelek Rimpoche, concentrated meditation and White Tara practice, discussion
groups, time for outdoor recreation, Tara dances, a talk by a Tibetan
doctor, and much more, including the Heart Shrine Relics!
For more information
on the retreat, call 734-994-3387 ext. 1
