We are so active running here and there between job and family, paying bills, doing daily chores and all the rest. These things keep us absolutely busy. And don't forget laziness comes in the picture and takes a lot of time too. People feel there's not enough time to do everything and that is how a lot of stress and pressure is built up. In the end we probably allocate five minutes to half an hour, or maybe one to three hours maximum for what we call spiritual practice. What about the rest of our day, which is actually the majority of our time? If you know how, there
is a way to handle it. There is a way to combine spiritual practice with
everyday life. The trick is to take your job, your chore, or whatever
it is you do and make it spiritual! That may seem easy for people who
because of their profession, think they are already doing something to
help others. But what about those who have regular jobs in the office,
in the shop, or at a plant? Lawyers, teachers, shopkeepers, scientists,
workers, road-builders? They may well think they're not doing anything
spiritual. Even if you have difficulties, like not being able to get a job, that can become spiritual practice! You can turn that into spiritual practice by thinking to yourself, "I'm not getting a job. May this difficulty purify not just me but all living beings, and particularly those who are connected with me. May any hardship that comes because I don't have a job, be used to purify every living being's negativity, particularly miserliness." In short, we can utilize the difficulties in life to purify negativity, and enjoyable things in life can be used to build up appreciation. Whatever you encounter can be used to benefit yourself and others. It depends on the individual, and how they make the best use of it. In short, to have less stress, to gain more benefit from life, to be able to succeed, one must know how to combine spiritual practice with everyday life. Once we are able to do that, our spiritual and material lives begin to work together and support each other. This is the need of people today. -Edited by Aura Glaser (Ann Arbor)
Jewel Heart Ann Arbor hosted its first Open House on Wednesday March 26. About 30 people attended including 10 people who were first time visitors to Jewel Heart, The night began with informal conversation, supplemented by tea, cookies, an assortment of nori rolls and delicious home made banana nut breads. Chris Branson, who hosted the event, introduced Rimpoche who sat in the audience with the other visitors. She explained Jewel Heart's mission, highlighted upcoming programs, and answered general questions about Buddhism. Other senior students assisted in answering questions about Buddhist practice, meditation, and the specifics of Tibetan Buddhism. Chris concluded the talk by leading a brief meditation. The evening appeared to be the perfect opportunity to introduce Jewel Heart to those with an interest in Buddhism, but who might be hesitant to come to a Tuesday night teaching. The Sangha Committee and Jewel Heart Administrative staff plan to organize more Open House evenings in the hopes of making Jewel Heart more accessible to our local community. -Arielle Goldman (Ann Arbor)
