Jewel Heart Pilgrimage to Bodhgaya

JEWEL HEART PILGRIMAGE
December 27, 2019 to January 5, 2020

Jewel Heart is pleased to announce a Pilgrimage to Bodhgaya, India including teachings and empowerment by His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

During our stay in Bodhgaya, we will receive teachings from His Holiness the Dalai Lama on Shantideva's A Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life (chodjug) from December 28 and 29. On the morning of December 30, His Holiness will confer an Avalokiteshvara Initiation (chenresig wang). On the morning of December 31, we will attend Long Life offering prayers for His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

From January 2 - 3, 2020, His Holiness will give the empowerments on The Wheel of Teachings on Manjushri Empowerments (jamyang choekhor). This is very rare teaching which we will be most fortunate to attend.

The group will receive a private audience and talk with H.E. Kyabje Samdhong Rinpoche.
Bodhgaya has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Mahabodhi Temple and the Bodhi Tree: The group will visit the spot where Buddha attained enlightenment meditating on the Diamond Throne beneath the Bodhi tree. The Bodhi tree, under which he is said to have found the answers he was seeking after a long and hard meditation, is the core of the Mahabodhi Mahavihara Temple Complex. The Mahabodhi temple has Jataka stories engraved on its walls. The group will also visit the Giant Buddha statue and Buddhist temples around Bodhgaya.

During our stay in Bodhgaya, sightseeing will include Dhongra Hill where the Mahakala Cave and monastery are located. After a short rest, the group will visit the Mahakala Cave and offer lights at the site. The group will proceed back to Bodhgaya. Enroute we will visit the village of Uravilva where Buddha engaged in austere practices for six years. This is also the site where Sujata offered the Buddha a bowl of rice. Thereafter the group will visit the holy place Lo-Druk-Ka-Wa which means place of the six year meditation.

The group will also visit Nalanda. Nalanda was founded in the 5th Century AD and was one of the world’s great universities until it was destroyed in the 12th Century AD by the Afghan invader Bhaktiar Khilji. It was built on a pilgrimage site that had been visited by the Buddha. Many famous teachers studied here including Nargajuna, Aryadeva, Asanga and Vasubandu. When Chinese scholar Xuan Zhang visited Nalanda he reported that as many as 10,000 monks and scholars resided there. Xuan Zhang later returned to China with 657 sutras, many of which were translated from Sanskrit into Chinese.

Next we will visit Rajgir, the capital of the Magadha empire until it was moved to Patna in the 5th Century BC. Buddha visited Rajgir many times and delivered some of his most famous sermons here. On Griddhakoota Hill (Vulture’s Peak) he set in motion the Second Wheel of Dharma. Many, including King Bimbisara, were converted to the new faith. Rajgir was the site of the First Buddhist Council. The Buddhist Sangha of Japan has constructed the massive modern Shanti Stupa (Peace Pagoda) at the top of the hill in commemoration. A bridle path leads up the hill but it is much more fun to take the Aerial Chairlift. The ride takes 7.5 minutes and the view is splendid over the hills of Rajgir. Next walk to Vulture’s Peak. Here you will see the rock formations in the shape of a vulture.
