Cleveland Programs July – August 2016

July 7, 2016:  A Special Evening with Author and Meditator Mark S. Kacik

Author Mark Kacik traveled the backroads of Asia to explore Buddhist traditions, advance his meditation practice, , and find alternatives to his hectic and materialistic American lifestyle. In his book, Caves, Huts, and Monasteries: Finding the deeper self along the footpaths of Asia, Mark shares an experiential-level comparison of the Buddhist traditions he encountered while visiting Buddhist monasteries of differing traditions.  The talk will tie loosely to this book, but the photos shown and discussion will focus on different Buddhist traditions of Asia as experienced in Nepal, India, Vietnam and Korea.

“Caves, Huts, and Monasteries is a beautifully written, completely engaging memoir of Mark Kacik’s spiritual journey through Asia. It’s rare to find a book that describes so selflessly the many challenges, joys and insights of a very personal odyssey. This book will resonate deeply with those already on a path of inner discovery and will inspire those contemplating such a possibility.”
Joseph Goldstein, author of Mindfulness: A Practical Guide to Awakening

June Picnic at the Kirchner’s

The weather cooperated and a good time was had by all humans and one small Schnitzel dog.  This is definitely a yearly tradition to continue!  Many thanks to the Kirchner’s who have been hosting this at their beautiful woodland home for – how many years has it been now? A great sangha event!

Coming in September!

We will be hosting several weeks of Welcome to Jewel Heart events beginning with an open house and photography exhibit on Friday Sept. 9, to coincide with the Tremont Walkabout Weekend. Sarah Ralston and David Larsen are the two artists who will be showing their recent work.

This will be followed by two free Friday night events, ‘An introduction to the varieties of Tibetan meditation’, on September 16, and ‘An introduction to the Tibetan tradition of Buddhism, Gelek Rimpoche, and Jewel Heart, on September 23.

The Tremont Arts and Cultural Festival will be held this year in Lincoln Park on Saturday, September 17 (11-6), and Sunday, September18 (12-5pm). For those who haven’t attended this festival before, it has great art and artisans, great food (from local churches including Korean and Mexican) and live entertainment.
We are looking for volunteers to take a shift at the Jewel Heart Cleveland non-profit table, which will have informational flyers and freebies as outreach.

Report on All-Sangha Potluck and Meeting

On April 24 the JHCleve sangha gathered for a potluck and meeting of the Sangha Council Exec Com in which all were encouraged to participate. As usual the food was great – delicious and healthy (dark chocolate brownies are health food, amirite?). Our Prez Sarah led the meeting which included financial and program committee reports, an overview of the JH Chaplaincy program for those who haven’t heard of this before, and updates on coming events. We also reviewed actions taken on proposals made at the last All Sangha meeting, and set plans for another potluck meeting in about four months.

Of special importance, planning for a September series of Introduction to Jewel Heart evenings is beginning; volunteers will be needed to help make these evenings a success. The Intro events will be followed by a Gateway course in October.
