Changing habitual patterns is like swimming upstream. The fact that Buddhas effortlessly help others is also a habitual pattern, but it is preceded by a daily habit of developing altruism.
— Gelek Rimpoche
In order to make these qualities of altruism applicable to ourselves, we have to first learn about them. First, listen to the teachings – the examples of accomplishment by previous buddhas and bodhisattvas. Then we think about the teachings and instructions we have heard. Finally, we meditate on what we have understood.
If we don’t think before we meditate, we can be misled. This is called “blind faith.” We have to learn, analyze, think, accept or reject the the teachings. Use our intelligent mind. This is the daily habit we put into practice.
